Celebrating Christmas in Mexico is truly a wonderful and unique experience. The festivities begin December 16 with the traditional posada which is a procession that starts at the main church and proceeds from house to house for nine consecutive evenings.
At the head of the procession, statues of Mary and Joseph are carried and followed by people singing, praying, and holding lighted candles. With this, people remember the wanderings of Mary and Joseph through streets of Bethlehem in search of lodging.
The first evening, the procession leaves the church to a family’s home where everyone is welcomed. After a religious ceremony, the festivities continue with the enjoyment of tropical Mexican pastries and drinks that are made especially for this occasion.
The Posada of that evening ends with traditional games, such as the breaking of the Piñata and distribution of fruit, sweets, and toys that it contained. The statues of Mary and Joseph remain in this home for the night. The Posada continues the following evening, from this house to another, repeating the same type of celebration until December 24th.
The Ballet Folklorico Mexicano through “Christmas in Mexico” will show you how Mexico celebrates Christmas and take you to various regions to share the fun and excitement of its folklore through music, song, and dance.
